[0:00] Byron Katie: OK. Who would like
to do The Work?
[0:03] Good. Let's do The Work.
[0:05] OK, sweetie pie,
let's hear what you've written.
[0:08] John: "I am frustrated with mom
because I can't help her."
[0:17] "I can't satisfy her.
I can't make her happy
[0:21] and I can't please her."
[0:23] OK. So, continue to read.
[0:35] "I want mom to be happy,
[0:38] to love me,
[0:42] to appreciate me
and what I do for her."
[0:47] "And to tell me that she loves
what I give her."
[0:56] "Mom should show me
how happy she is."
[1:03] "She should let me know
what a joy I am."
[1:08] "Mom should stop saying 'No,'
[1:13] Stop saying 'I’m good'--
[1:18] and be accepting
of my offers."
[1:24] "I need mom to love me,
[1:27] accept me,
[1:29] accept my offers--
[1:34] for travel."
[1:36] I need her to enjoy something I give her,
enjoy something I offer her."
[1:45] "Mom is resistant,
[1:47] reactive,
[1:50] negative,
[1:51] judgmental
[1:53] and narrow-minded."
[2:01] "I don't ever want mom
to complain, be uncomfortable,
[2:04] be moody, get upset
and throw a tantrum."
[2:14] Wow. How many of you
have these thoughts around your mom?
[2:18] Oh my God!
[2:21] Oh, my hand was
right up there.
[2:23] Yeah. OK. Let's start at
"I want"--
[2:27] "I want mom
to be happy".
[2:30] Is that true?
[2:31] Yes.
[2:32] OK. So let's see,
"You want your mom to be happy".
[2:36] Is that really true?
[2:43] Now notice how you react
when you believe that thought.
[2:49] I spend a lot of energy.
[2:54] I try to think, find things
that will make her happy and--
[3:04] I test them out--
[3:07] and nothing ever seems
to really make her happy.
[3:11] And then how do you react
when you think the thought
[3:14] "I want my mom to be happy"
and she's not happy.
[3:19] Describe what happens
inside of you.
[3:22] Oh, my gosh.
[3:26] I feel--
[3:31] Everything sinks.
[3:35] I feel at that very moment
that I've lost everything.
[3:40] And how do you treat your mother
when you're feeling that way?
[3:45] I get angry with her.
[3:47] Um-hmm.
[3:49] -I don't like her.
-Yeah.
[3:52] So, you get angry,
you don't like her.
[3:54] I turn-- I don't like her.
I judge her.
[3:59] So, now--
[4:01] just look at those situations
[4:05] where you're offering her the trips,
so you're doing everything
[4:09] and she's rejecting them.
[4:12] Now, who would you be
--witnessing, witness her--
[4:16] without the thought
"I want my mother to be happy."
[4:25] I would love her.
[4:29] I would not have any reason to be
angry with her or dislike her
[4:36] or be frustrated with her
or to judge her, or--
[4:42] And I've had moments
of this, when I've stopped
[4:47] and I've seen it and had some clarity there
and I would be that way.
[4:52] I would be--
[4:54] I would feel connected
to myself and the world.
[4:58] OK. So, let's, mmm--
[5:00] Let's look at a situation
where you've offered your mother a trip
[5:03] and she doesn't want it. OK?
[5:06] So, "I want my mother to be happy."
Turned around, "I don't want"--
[5:13] "I don't want
my mom to be happy."
[5:15] OK. Now, do you see her just honestly
saying she doesn't want to go?
[5:22] Yeah. She ignored my advance,
she ignored my request to her,
[5:28] you know, at my invitation.
[5:30] She ignored it for a long time
and finally three weeks later,
[5:33] I come around, something pops up online
where it reminds me to ask her again.
[5:38] And I did and this time
she said, "I don't want to go."
[5:43] Is that over the phone?
[5:45] Yeah.
[5:46] OK. So imagine,
without the thought
[5:49] "I want her to be happy,"
her saying to you,
[5:53] "I don't want to go."
[5:56] It makes sense.
[6:00] If I'm your mother
[6:03] and you offer me a trip
[6:05] and I don't want to go,
I have made me happy.
[6:10] Right.
[6:13] I'm not going to fear your reaction
to the point where I'll go and be miserable,
[6:21] so I don't have
to experience your anger.
[6:24] I'm happy not going, thank you.
You've made me happy--
[6:32] by just hearing me.
[6:34] Right.
[6:37] So, when I say, "You want your mother to be
happy, is it true?" That's quite a question.
[6:43] "No, I don't want
my mother to be happy.
[6:44] I want her to go on this trip
I've offered her and--
[6:48] that's about it."
[6:53] Right.
[6:56] "I don't want her to be happy. I want to be
the one responsible for her happiness."
[7:03] "She can't just have it on her own.
I did it. I made my mother happy."
[7:12] I brought her to California for her
70th birthday, which was this year, and--
[7:21] I noticed how
[7:27] time after time of this attempt
for her to be happy that--
[7:36] very clearly that
[7:41] I just couldn't do it.
[7:43] I couldn't do it.
[7:47] And--
[7:52] I did-- How did I react?
[7:55] I did become, every time,
every little thing,
[8:00] just very frustrated.
[8:02] And it's her personality to always
say how unhappy she is and--
[8:08] That makes her happy.
[8:14] -Yeah.
-Hmm.
[8:17] But are you courageous
enough to listen
[8:20] without thinking
you have to fix it, mend it, take care of it?
[8:25] Just hear her.
[8:28] You might,
"unhappy-unhappy-unhappy"--
[8:30] and "I just want someone to listen.
That would make me happy."
[8:37] Yeah, I'm a little off course.
[8:39] I mean, sometimes that's as happy
as people could relate to.
[8:44] You know, we just
want to be heard.
[8:48] Takes a lot of courage
to hear that--
[8:51] to hear a miserable person
without trying to change them.
[8:55] Yeah.
[8:56] Just to listen. There's an amazing
opportunity to connect there,
[9:00] but it does,
it takes a lot of courage.
[9:06] "I want her to be happy,"
turn it around.
[9:10] "I want her to be unhappy."
[9:11] Yes. Yes. Give me examples of that.
We've already heard several.
[9:18] Well, when she's unhappy,
she's happy.
[9:20] You know, she's unhappy,
then that's the way she wants to be, right?
[9:23] Well, it's the best
she can do.
[9:27] Right.
[9:28] OK, so you be your mom.
Be unhappy-unhappy-unhappy.
[9:30] Like one of those
conversations that--
[9:33] OK. And I'm going to be you.
[9:36] I'm going to be a son that really
wants her to be happy. OK?
[9:41] -So, "Hi, mom."
-"Hi. John.
[9:48] What are you doing?"
[9:49] "Well, I have this trip. I have this
trip that I'd like you to take."
[9:56] "It's a gift. It's a wonderful, wonderful thing.
It will make you so happy."
[10:04] "I don't know if I'm sure
I want to do something like that."
[10:08] "Hmmm."
[10:10] "As a matter of fact,
I just took a trip with you
[10:12] and I don't think I want to do another one
right now. I'm happy here."
[10:31] "Well, you know, mom-- I've been kind
of looking at myself and I understand that."
[10:37] "And I, you know,
I'm making some headway."
[10:42] "And I'd love it, if you change
your mind, to let me know."
[10:50] "And as long as I'm able to offer
you this trip, I'm going to do it.
[10:54] So, just know
that that's available."
[10:59] "Thank you."
[11:02] "You're welcome. Is there
anything that I could do,
[11:05] you know, within my means,
to give you a happier life?"
[11:12] "Wow!
[11:16] Can I think about that?"
[11:18] "Yes."
[11:20] "OK."
[11:21] "Yeah. That's very nice
of you to say."
[11:23] "Thank you. So, how's your life?"
[11:26] "Oh my goodness--
It's, oh, goodness. It's"--
[11:30] "Are you happy?"
[11:32] What would your mom say?
[11:34] She'd say, "Yes."
[11:36] Oh, then you got
what you wanted.
[11:43] You know, we assume we want
our mothers to be happy.
[11:45] We miss the fact
that they probably are.
[11:50] You know?
[11:53] I just get a lot of images
now of how she is happy--
[12:00] With her grandchildren, with my brother
and cooking and doing things like that.
[12:06] Oh, well let me take her away
from all that.
[12:28] So, "I don't want my mother to be happy"
is starting to make sense?
[12:32] -Yeah.
-Yeah.
[12:34] Yeah.
[12:36] OK. So, start at the top, now.
[12:39] OK.
[12:41] "I'm frustrated with mom
because I can't help her."
[12:45] So, your mother needs
your help. Is that true?
[12:50] No.
[12:51] And how do you react when you think
the thought that she needs your help?
[12:55] I look for ways
to help her.
[12:58] I look for ways
to enlighten her.
[13:00] I look for ways to make
her life easier for her.
[13:04] For her--
[13:05] Which is all really beautiful,
unless it's against her will.
[13:17] I try to enlighten her.
[13:18] -Yeah.
-Yeah.
[13:20] Yeah.
[13:21] That's fairly egoic,
wouldn't you agree?
[13:26] Yeah.
[13:27] Yes.
[13:29] Yes.
[13:32] It's like, "How unenlightened of me
to see you as less enlightened than me."
[13:38] Yeah, yeah.
[13:43] So, who would you be
without the thought
[13:47] "My mother needs
my help to be happy?"
[13:50] Free.
[13:53] Yeah. Free to see a lot.
[13:54] Free to see a lot, yeah.
[13:55] Yeah.
[13:56] Lots-- To love her.
[13:57] Yeah.
[13:58] To see her beauty,
which I see sometimes.
[14:01] Yeah.
[14:01] You know?
[14:02] It's beautiful to, maybe,
just call occasionally
[14:06] and just check in.
"Mom, you happy?"
[14:10] And just see what she has to say
about that part of her life--
[14:14] Right.
[14:15] --without you guessing.
[14:17] Right.
[14:18] Or projecting onto her.
[14:19] Right.
[14:20] "My mother needs my help
to be happy," turn it around.
[14:24] "I need my help
to be happy."
[14:26] Yeah, "You need
your help to be happy,"
[14:29] especially those things
around your mother's happiness.
[14:34] You need
your help there.
[14:36] Right.
[14:37] I need to see it
more clearly.
[14:41] I've witnessed the world
and I see believers.
[14:49] I see people who appear
[14:52] not to be happy,
[14:53] but they're simply
believing their thoughts.
[14:57] That's all.
[14:59] And under that is pure joy.
[15:03] In the meantime,
everyone's safe.
[15:06] There's no harm.
[15:09] And test it.
[15:13] "My mother needs
my help to be happy."
[15:16] "My mother does not need
my help to be happy."
[15:20] So, give me an example.
[15:23] She's already fine.
[15:26] She's full of cooking
and grandchildren and--
[15:28] Absolutely.
[15:29] And sons that want
to buy her trips
[15:33] and give her things
to add to her life--
[15:38] Maybe a little not so settled
around how to tell him "No,"
[15:43] but other than that,
a pretty, pretty good life.
[15:47] Yeah.
[15:48] OK. Next one.
[15:50] "I'm frustrated with my mom
because I can't satisfy her."
[15:53] "You can't satisfy her."
[15:55] Yeah.
[15:56] Is that true?
[15:59] Yes.
[16:01] "You can't satisfy her."
Can you absolutely know that it's true?
[16:05] No.
[16:06] And how do you react when you think
the thought, "I can't satisfy her?"
[16:11] I turn on myself, sometimes.
[16:16] Ask, "What's wrong with me?"
[16:21] And I wind up angry.
[16:27] "I can't satisfy her."
[16:29] Who would you be
without the thought?
[16:32] Witness her at home alone,
[16:36] or at home
with her grandkids, at home just--
[16:40] Who would you be without the thought
"I can't satisfy her."
[16:44] Yeah. I wouldn't even consider myself
anymore that that would be my job.
[16:49] Because it's done.
[16:51] That job is done.
She does that.
[16:53] Yeah, yeah.
[16:56] "I can't satisfy my mother,"
turn it around.
[17:01] "I can satisfy my mother."
[17:02] Give me an example
of how you can satisfy your mother.
[17:05] By leaving her alone.
[17:13] And checking in,
"Mom, you need any help?"
[17:17] "Mom, are you happy?",
"Mom, is there anything I can do to"--,
[17:22] "Anything I can give you",
"Anything I can do for you?"
[17:27] "Are you OK?".
[17:30] That sounds so nice.
[17:32] Yes, she probably
would really think so, too.
[17:35] I've not ever been able
to do that.
[17:39] Yeah, you've been
thinking for her.
[17:45] Can you find another example?
"I can satisfy her."
[17:49] By being kind.
[17:52] -And interested in her life.
-And interested. And questions.
[17:57] OK. Continue to read.
[18:00] "Mom should show me
how happy she is."
[18:08] How could she do that?
[18:13] -In my imagination?
-Yeah.
[18:17] Ah, God.
[18:23] -See, you don't even know.
-No.
[18:29] She could say, "Oh my gosh,
John, you made me so happy."
[18:35] OK. So--
[18:38] "Ring, ring."
[18:40] OK, so now you're your mother
and I'm John.
[18:43] "Ring, ring."
[18:44] "Hi John."
[18:45] "Hi. Mom would you do something for me?
It's really important."
[18:49] "Uh-huh."
[18:50] -"Would you try?"
-"Yeah, yeah."
[18:52] "OK. Would you tell me,
'John, you make me so happy'?"
[18:59] "John, you make me
so happy."
[19:00] "Thank you.
[19:02] That's all I wanted,
thank you."
[19:08] "OK.
[19:10] You're welcome."
[19:11] -"Goodbye."
-"Bye."
[19:12] "You've made me
very happy."
[19:16] The story here is
I live that way.
[19:19] If I want something,
I ask for it.
[19:21] Yeah.
[19:22] You might also add, "Mom, every time
we talk could you please tell me that?"
[19:31] "Whether it's true or not,
because it's what I want to hear.
[19:35] It would make me
very happy."
[19:38] Yeah. Right. Yeah.
[19:41] -Yeah.
-Mm-hmm.
[19:43] Otherwise you just
don't want it.
[19:45] Otherwise it's a lie
that running in your head.
[19:48] Right.
[19:49] It's a huge mind game.
[19:52] Right. Huge.
[19:56] OK. So, "She should show you
how happy she is."
[20:01] So, turned around.
[20:04] "I should show me
how happy I am."
[20:05] Yeah. Whether my mother
is happy or not.
[20:08] -Right.
-That's it.
[20:09] Right.
[20:12] -In that situation.
-Yeah.
[20:14] Yeah. "I should show me
how happy she is."
[20:16] Yes, because your eyes haven't
really been opened to it.
[20:20] Uh-uh.
[20:20] Good. Continue.
[20:23] "Mom should show me
how unhappy she is?"
[20:26] Yes.
[20:28] Because that's who she is.
[20:30] Well, not only that.
She's sharing everything with you.
[20:33] Oh!
[20:36] Got it.
[20:37] Yeah. Good.
[20:39] -Let's look at the next one.
-Got it. OK.
[20:41] Oh, that's so amazing.
'Cause if you really have that one,
[20:44] it means we can afford to be miserable
around you without you becoming unhappy.
[20:52] You're the one
we can come to.
[20:56] And we know
it's going to be OK.
[21:00] -We'll be heard.
-Right.
[21:03] And respected.
[21:06] Yeah.
[21:06] And you won't try to make
us happy-happy-happy.
[21:11] Mmm-- You want me
to go down to Number 5?
[21:13] -OK.
-OK.
[21:15] "Mom is resistant,
[21:17] reactive,
[21:19] negative,
[21:21] judgmental,
[21:22] narrow-minded."
[21:29] An example of her
"narrow-mindedness"?
[21:33] -Fear of flying.
-Yeah.
[21:36] Afraid of everything, really.
[21:38] It's like, people say,
you know, they "fear flying."
[21:42] If they contemplate getting on a plane--
like you buying them a ticket.
[21:47] then they see an image of some terrified
woman that they think is them,
[21:54] on a plane
and the plane's going down.
[21:58] And they really think
that's them.
[22:01] And so they experience that movie
and they fear their mind, not flying.
[22:11] -So, read it again.
-OK. "Mom is resistant"--
[22:15] OK. Is she resistant
or projecting?
[22:19] -Projecting.
-Yeah.
[22:21] So, look what
you project onto her.
[22:26] That gives you a lot
to take care of.
[22:27] She projects, you project--
One of you can take care of it.
[22:31] Right.
[22:32] But it's not easy, is it?
[22:34] -No.
-OK. So, she's just like you.
[22:36] -Yeah.
-OK.
[22:38] "I'm reactive, negative,
judgmental, narrow-minded."
[22:43] OK. So, turned around,
"In that situation with my mom,
[22:47] when I want her
to be happy, I am"--
[22:53] "I am resistant, reactive, negative,
judgmental and narrow-minded."
[23:02] Yeah, all of that.
[23:06] OK. And the last one?
[23:08] OK. "I don't ever
want mom to complain,
[23:12] be uncomfortable,
be moody,
[23:15] get upset
or throw a tantrum."
[23:18] OK. So, let's look at--
What was the first one?
[23:24] Complain.
[23:25] OK. So, you be mom complaining.
Like an example of a complaint.
[23:31] And I'll be John.
[23:33] "I don't really like this.
[23:35] It's not cooked. It's pork.
And it's not cooked well enough."
[23:39] "It's got-- There's something--
It hasn't been cooked.
[23:42] Pork has to be cooked."
[23:45] "You know, I really hear that.
So--
[23:51] I've learned a lot.
[23:55] You're so good
with pork."
[24:03] "So, let's cook it
a little longer."
[24:06] "OK, get the waiter."
[24:09] "OK, great.
[24:11] Waiter!'"
[24:15] "I know that you have to--
[24:17] You cannot eat pork
when it's cooked like this.
[24:20] It's got to be
cooked all the way."
[24:21] "So, waiter, I'd really
appreciate if you heard her,
[24:31] took the order back and--
[24:36] brought it back
just the way she's described."
[24:46] "This pork is
fine with me, but"--
[24:49] Yeah.
[24:50] "--if you would take
my mom's back."
[24:53] Unless I'm just not being honest,
I might say, "Take them both back."
[24:58] No, I wanted to fight her on it.
Yeah. Because she--
[25:01] That wasn't about the pork.
[25:04] With her it was about the pork.
With you it was--
[25:08] It was about her being happy
with something that is perfectly fine.
[25:14] That wasn't perfectly fine.
[25:19] It just was perfectly fine
with one person at that table.
[25:26] -You get it, honey?
-Yeah. Yeah.
[25:28] OK. And now here's the rub.
She wasn't happy with it.
[25:31] Right.
[25:33] Right.
[25:34] You did not want her
to be happy.
[25:38] I did want her
to be happy with it.
[25:46] That's where my frustration--
[25:48] And that's not possible
because the pork wasn't cooked--
[25:54] --in a way
that she could be happy with.
[25:59] And you know from her position,
honey, she's just stating a fact.
[26:02] Mm-hmm.
[26:03] You know, her fact.
[26:04] Mm-hmm.
[26:06] It wasn't OK with her.
[26:07] Yeah.
[26:08] What would make her happy
is that you send it back.
[26:10] Yeah.
[26:11] Right.
[26:12] So, when you have the thought
"You want your mother to be happy"-- Really?
[26:16] It's a huge question.
[26:18] There is a "Oh, yes,"
the answer is "Yes".
[26:22] In my heart,
but not in my actions.
[26:25] So, not in my mind.
[26:31] I didn't see it beyond.
[26:33] So, in another example
of her complaining.
[26:39] "It's too hot out here and this line
to get back on this boat is too long."
[26:44] "What do you suggest, mom?"
[26:46] She jumped the line.
[26:48] -She jumped the line?
-She jumped the line.
[26:51] Well, that's good with her.
[26:58] -That's good with her.
-I was so, like, "What?"
[27:01] The line was
too short for her.
[27:03] Too long.
[27:04] I mean, too long for her.
[27:05] Yeah.
[27:07] -And she jumped it.
-Yeah.
[27:09] That made her very happy.
[27:15] You want your mother
to be happy or not?
[27:20] -You know I'm serious.
-I know you are.
[27:22] -She jumped the line.
-Yeah.
[27:26] I cringed.
[27:28] You know, it was her
that believed it.
[27:33] It had nothing
to do with you.
[27:35] What you were thinking
and believing about your mother--
[27:37] Now, that could
use a little Work.
[27:38] -Right.
-Yeah.
[27:40] -My cringing can use a little work.
-Yeah.
[27:42] Right.
[27:43] So, give me another--
You know, did you jump the line?
[27:45] -She did look happy.
-Did you jump the line?
[27:48] I didn't, but I joined her.
[27:51] I mean,
I didn't jump the line,
[27:52] but I just got in right beside her
and sort of hid my side, you know, from view.
[28:06] I mean, I had
to stay with her.
[28:15] That's a good one.
[28:20] Your mother is so capable.
[28:24] I mean--
[28:25] I just couldn't see myself going back
to the end of the line and leaving her there.
[28:32] OK. Another example
of your mother's complaints.
[28:39] "Your father
and his wife are just--
[28:44] silly to me.
[28:45] They act silly at the football games,
at the grandson's football games."
[28:51] "They just wear
the little, you know--
[28:55] they stitch up sweaters
and wear their names on their sweaters."
[28:59] "You know, mom, you know, you're right.
That can look pretty silly."
[29:13] "I wonder how much time
they put in on that"--
[29:19] -"Do you think"--
-"They're just so stupid."
[29:22] "Yeah"--
[29:23] "Why do they want to be so stupid
and embarrass everybody?"
[29:26] "You know--
[29:28] That's an excellent question.
[29:30] Have you asked them?"
[29:34] -"I'm not going to talk to them."
-"Yeah. Well, I understand that.
[29:38] But you know, ma,
do you think they're having fun?"
[29:43] "I hope so."
[29:44] "Oh, mom,
that's so like you."
[29:56] "I hope so, too."
[29:58] "They sure are
looking silly to me."
[30:00] "Well, I guess sometimes
that's what it takes.
[30:04] Just to be silly sometimes,
like the time you jumped that line."
[30:18] "Oh, no".
[30:21] "And me, acting like I wasn't with you--
That was great."
[30:35] What I'm hearing, each time
it's her mind and her sharing it.
[30:40] That's not the way
she likes pork,
[30:44] and the line is too long,
[30:47] and they look pretty silly.
That's her world.
[30:52] Right.
[30:53] But, you complain about her likes
and dislikes and that's your pain.
[31:03] So, you project that onto her
as though those were her complaints.
[31:07] It's your complaints about her.
[31:09] Hers are observations.
[31:12] Yeah, that could be,
if I didn't project.
[31:15] Yeah, without your story
it's just very clear.
[31:18] Right.
[31:20] There's no one to resent or--
[31:23] And see, I project--
[31:24] I didn't say much
about the whole line incident
[31:27] because I just thought it was outrageous
and just let it go, you know?
[31:31] Yeah.
[31:32] It's my Work.
[31:34] But when she says
something about my father
[31:38] or anybody else and what I project
to be a negative complaint,
[31:42] I'd say, "Oh look, they're just"--
[31:46] I would say something
like something like that--
[31:48] But it would be to convince her
that they're just themselves having fun, and she--
[31:53] They own a--
[31:54] -So, your attempt to change her mind.
-Yeah.
[31:58] -Your attempt to teach.
-Yeah.
[31:59] When you're not
in a student position,
[32:02] you're in a really, really,
very limited place: the teacher.
[32:06] Got ya.
[32:09] So, "I'm willing to"--
[32:11] "I'm willing
to hear mom complain."
[32:18] -Exciting.
-Exciting.
[32:21] "I'm willing for her
to be uncomfortable."
[32:25] Exciting.
[32:29] And I mean that
in the kindest sense.
[32:32] Yeah.
[32:33] So, honey, let's do
one of those, OK?
[32:36] Where you're your mom,
and you're very uncomfortable.
[32:39] One of those things you've witnessed
where she's uncomfortable.
[32:43] And I'm going to be you.
[32:46] "How much longer do we have drive here?
I'm not comfortable in the car.
[32:51] I don't--
[32:53] How long did you say it was gonna be?
It seems like it's been two hours."
[32:57] "Oh, mom, it's going to be
two more hours."
[33:03] "You told me
it was going to be two.
[33:06] Only two."
[33:06] "Well, I am very sorry for that."
[33:10] "I don't like it here."
[33:12] "I hear that.
[33:14] Mmm-- What do you suggest?"
[33:20] "Number 1, I'll be more accurate the way
I speak on timing, next time.
[33:27] But what do you suggest,
because here we are right now."
[33:31] "I'm hungry."
[33:32] "OK, the next time we see
a place to eat, let's pull over and eat."
[33:37] (Audience: Pork.)
[33:42] Raw pork.
[33:48] "Oh."
[33:50] "Oh no, let's just go, let's just get back
and then we'll get something to eat."
[33:55] "Oh, you know, you're amazing.
[33:58] You know, the way I know you, is you're always
making the best out of a poor situation.
[34:03] A bad situation.
[34:07] "What do you mean?"
[34:09] "Well, you know, you're hungry
and yet you say, 'Let’s just keep going'.
[34:16] 'Let's just get home'."
[34:17] "I'm hungry
and I wanna get home.
[34:19] So let's get home and then we'll talk
about getting something to eat."
[34:21] "Excellent. I hear that."
[34:25] "I don't know why I ever came here
in the first place."
[34:27] "You know, that's interesting
that you should say that. Why did you?"
[34:39] "I just thought
that you'd be happy if I did."
[34:42] "Oh--
[34:45] Oh, mom,
that is so like you!
[34:47] You know, I'm the same way.
I'm always thinking of your happiness."
[34:58] "We're so alike."
[35:03] "Let's just get home!"
[35:07] "I'm with you
on that one.
[35:10] There we are again,
the same."
[35:14] OK, so, you know,
what happened there, honey, in those little--
[35:18] no matter what she said,
I simply listened.
[35:22] Right, right.
[35:24] And when I want
my mom to be happy,
[35:26] she tells me what she wants.
I listen.
[35:30] Right.
[35:31] She's hungry?
I feed her.
[35:33] Right.
[35:34] She wants to go home?
I take her home.
[35:37] Right.
[35:39] She changes her mind?
[35:41] I want her to be happy.
It's OK with me. I listen.
[35:45] That way I hear all the clues
about how to assist my mother's happiness.
[35:51] -And I'm not a doormat.
-Right. Right.
[35:55] I'm simply a listener who is living out
what is really true for me,
[35:59] -"I want my mother to be happy."
-Right.
[36:02] -Thank you, precious.
-Thank you.
[36:04] -Good stuff.
-Such an honor.
[36:06] You know--
[36:09] Sons and mothers--
[36:12] Sons and mothers are--
It can be really tricky emotionally and--
[36:21] You know, I don't know
what that is, but I have two sons
[36:24] and I'm very grateful.
And it is a privilege to sit with you.
[36:28] -Thank you, too.
-Thank you, John.
[36:37] OK, so what did you--
What did you experience in this Work?
[36:41] Any feedback for John?
[36:44] Yes.
[36:48] That was totally
my Worksheet.
[36:51] I really wanted
my mom to be happy
[36:54] and she goes to Spain
every year, a couple of months.
[36:56] So, I bought a ticket
and flew out to surprise her.
[37:02] So, then I rented a car
[37:04] and I was going
to show her the whole island
[37:08] and take her on all these
adventurous trips.
[37:11] And we're driving up the mountains
on this little road
[37:14] and I look over at my mom
and she's just petrified.
[37:17] She's holding on for dear life,
[37:20] looking out the window--
[37:22] It's like
an adventure in terror.
[37:25] It was.
[37:27] "Come on, mom,
what's the matter with you?"
[37:28] Totally, totally.
[37:31] And so, I returned the rental car,
and realized she's just happy here,
[37:37] in her little apartment,
doing the same things every day,
[37:42] eating at the same
place every day.
[37:44] So, I just, I did The Work
and I surrendered.
[37:48] And we had the sweetest
time ever, my mom and I.
[37:53] Just the two of us together,
drinking coffee, cooking together,
[37:58] even sleeping
in the same room.
[38:00] I haven't done
since I was a little girl.
[38:03] So, thanks to The Work I came to see
I came there for me, you know?
[38:07] I got to have the most precious
quality time with my mom.
[38:14] Yes, in the back.
[38:15] That's a son/mother thing because
we're out here visiting my 87-year-old mom
[38:19] and I've been trying to make
her happy for decades
[38:23] and the wrinkle that we have is that
I live on the East Coast
[38:26] and my mom lives
about 10 minutes north of here.
[38:28] She can still drive, but now
she's got not one but two walkers
[38:31] and my sister and I
have been wondering, you know,
[38:34] how we could possibility
take care of her
[38:36] if she will not move East
because of the weather.
[38:38] She likes her little ranch home
in Marina Del Rey.
[38:41] And we've been worrying about her
for years and years and years.
[38:45] And hearing you, this beautiful
Work that you two just did,
[38:48] is so empowering
because she's happy.
[38:52] You know, she's living
independently, she can still drive.
[38:55] I got her membership to Costco
and that's become her gym.
[39:02] Because she'll go there almost every day
and she doesn't usually buy anything,
[39:06] but she pushes a cart around
and eats at the sample tables.
[39:11] So, you know--
[39:14] So, you do know
how to take care of her.
[39:17] Best thing. A lot cheaper
than my health club, I'll tell you that.
[39:22] But, it's beautiful.
[39:23] All that I'm reminded
today by your beautiful Work,
[39:26] and thanks for the courage
to get up there,
[39:28] is that she says
she's happy.
[39:33] You know I have an expression
that I haven't used in a while
[39:39] and it is "Love kills".
[39:42] And this is
an example of that.
[39:45] It's, you know, "I want my mother
to be happy, if it kills her"
[39:51] And I want it so badly
that I cannot see reality.
[39:56] I'm not in touch
with that.
[39:58] And because I love her,
I'm gonna take care of her.
[40:03] Like your description, sweetheart,
of taking your mother up,
[40:08] you know, renting the car
and I mean, "Welcome to hell, mom.
[40:13] You know, it doesn't matter if this
makes you happy or not, you know,
[40:16] I'm not looking at that I'm just sure
this is going to make you happy."
[40:20] And you believe it and, you know,
it really is the trip to hell.
[40:25] So, it's like, "Oh, my God,
here she comes again."
[40:35] Thank you all
for these great examples.
[40:37] And, honey, thank you
for showing us the way.
[40:40] Oh, thank you.
